Summer Art Camps 2008

Once again we are excited to be offering a great range of options for summer art instruction and art fun at Olpin Art Center.  This is our third summer and we have almost all new camps for you to enjoy.  Art camps are a great way to beat to the heat an summer boredom.  We look forward to seeing you here.

 

All camps focus on developing art skills and learning art concepts while having fun being creative.   Camps are taught by experienced artists at our unique art-focused facility in historic downtown Chandler.  All classes are recommended for ages 6-14 unless otherwise indicated.

 

Sessions  for 6-18 year-olds meet Monday through Friday

$115 for each one-week session, $100 for each additional on-week session

$225 for each two-week session, $200 for each additional two-week  session

Summer Art Camps provide a great way to develop creativity, improve art skills, and have fun. The camps include 3 hours of art instruction and a snack break.

 

Morning and afternoon camps can be combined for a 8:30 am-3:00 pm schedule.  Students provide their own lunch.

 

Preschool Art Camps will be offered most weeks from 10:30-11:30 am.  These camps will focus on teaching art skills appropriate for each child’s ability level.  They are recommended for 3-5 year-olds.  Adults are welcome to stay and participate with their children if they wish.  Cost is $10 per session or $39 for the whole week.

Olpin Art Center is also a great place to get art supplies to keep your kids busy at home.  We carry paints, brushes, canvases, sketchpads, pencils, polymer clay, ceramic clay, and many other art supplies.

CAMPS

May 27-30 (4 days/$92)

8:30-11:30  Renaissance Painting:  Learn about Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo and learn to paint like they did using sfumato, perspective, and proportion.

 

12:00-3:00 pm  Cartoon Characters:  Learn cartooning techniques while learning to draw your favorite cartoon characters.  Then create your own cartoon character(s).  Create a poster-sized version and a polymer clay version of your favorites.

3:00-6:00 pm  The Aliens are Coming:  Create fun projects including glow-in-the-dark UFO’s.  Invent an alien and make realistic paintings and sculptures of it.  Create spacecraft using paper maché and clay.

 

June 2-6

8:30-11:30 am  Big Animals:  Have big fun creating large animals out of paper mache and out of clay.  You’ll also paint and draw big animals of your choice.  Learn to use proportion and techniques that will help you create realistic animals.

12:00-3:00 pm Making Giant Pots week 1 of 2:  Make huge pots and decorate them in outrageous ways.  This camp will push the boundaries of your creativity.  Recommended for 8 years-old and up

 

3:00-6:00 pm  Painting and Drawing Large with Grids:  Create an oversized self-portrait in charcoal and a large painting from a photograph of your choice.  Hone observational drawing skills while creating highly realistic drawings and paintings.

 

June 9-13

8:30-11:30 am  Amazing Artists:  Learn about important artists, find out what makes them tick, and create works of art inspired by their art.  This is a great camp for you to develop your own personal style be seeing the styles of different artists.

 

12:00-3:00 pm  Making Giant Pots week 2 of 2

 

3:00-6:00 pm  Art of Japan:  Origami, miniature rock gardens, painting, and ceramics.  Learn about another culture and create works of art that combine traditional Japanese art with your own style and personality.

 

June 16-20

8:30-11:30 am  Pet Portraits:  Jodie Ozlanski, popular elementary art teacher, will be showing how to create outstanding pet portraits.  Bring photos of your pets.  Cancelled.

 

12:00-3:00 pm  Ancient Egypt:  Make a mummy, hieroglyphics, pyramids, and learn all about the art of the Ancient Egyptians.

 

3:00-6:00 pm Teen Painting  week 1 of 2:  Beginning to intermediate painters will get a lot of out this class.  Paint in oil, acrylic, or watercolor.  You will complete paintings with teacher guidance and instruction as well as explore your own direction.  Cancelled.

June 23-27

8:30-11:30 am  Cool Colors/Cool Stuff:  Learn all about color. Learn about mixing and combining different colors, and use color in lots of fun art activities like tie-dyeing, marbleizing paper, making multicolor crayons, and painting.

 

12:00-3:00 pm  Polymer Clay Creations:  Polymer clay is moldable with ease and hardens in a regular oven.  Create unique effects and realistic objects with our help.  Make bugs, flowers, beads, figures, and creatures.

 

3:00-5:00pm Special Clay Class exploring vase and bowl designs, and people out of clay.

 

June 30-July 3 (4 days/$92)

8:30-11:30 am  Portaits:  Create portraits with pencil, paint and charcoal and learn tricks and techniques to be successful with those materials.  Close observation is critical for portraiture and you’ll learn techniques to develop your observational skills.

 

12:00-3:00 pm  Impressionists and Beyond: Learn how to paint like the Impressionists did.  Look at light and color in a whole new way, too.  Create acrylic and oil paintings on canvas board.  Work at your easel and create a masterpiece or two of your own.  We'll also look at Van Gogh, Seurat, and other post-impressionists and you'll paint a painting in one of their styles.

 

3:00-6:00 pm  Pottery Wheel week 1 of 2: This class will give you the time, support, and instruction to learn to throw on the pottery wheel.  ($200 for 9 days)

 

July 7-11

8:30-11:30 am  Drawing with Charcoal:  Charcoal is a very versatile medium.  You will create realistic effects when you learn the techniques to control it.  Learn to drawing loosely from life to create a  variety of effects. 

 

12:00-3:00 pm  New Sport Action:  Choose your favorite sport for your theme for this week.  Create miniature sports equipment out of polymer clay.  Make and paint athletes out of paper maché.  Paint and draw athletes in action.  Design your own jersey for an imaginary sports team that you create.

 

3:00-6:00  Pottery Wheel week 2 of 2

 

July 14-18

8:30-11:30 am  Mastering Tempera Painting:  Paint realistically using opaque tempera cakes.  Students get best results in the least amount of time with these economical and easy to use paints.  You’ll learn color mixing techniques while painting landscapes, working from photographs, and painting from your imagination.

 

12:00-3:00 pm  Drawing in Perspective: Learn the rules of perspective from beginning to end.  Practice perspective drawing and create an large-scale drawing of a castles using the rules that you learn.  You will also develop shading skills in this camp.

 

3:00-6:00 pm  Art Around the World:  Create fun projects while learning about the artist traditions from Mexico, Native Americans, Africa, Australia, Japan, and more.  Paper sculpture, drawing, painting, and a whole lot more.

 

July 21-25

8:30-11:30 am  The Aliens are Coming:  Create fun projects including glow-in-the-dark UFO’s.  Invent an alien and make realistic paintings and sculptures of it.  Create spacecraft using paper maché and clay.

3:00-6:00 pm Watercolor for Teens:  Learn the basics and go beyond.  You’ll learn to secrets to keeping your colors vibrant.  Work on mixing colors, tints, shades, and tones.  Focus on the subject matter of your choice while your teacher coaches you through the process.  Great class for beginning, intermediate, or advance students.

 

 

July 28-Aug 1

8:30-11:30 am Polymer Clay Creations:  Create all kinds of creatures while learning to use polymer clay.  Fairy tale creatures, spiders, monsters, amazing beads, name plaques, etc.  Polymer clay is easy to use at home, too.

 

12:00-3:00 pm  Amazing Artists:  Learn about important artists, find out what makes them tick, and create works of art inspired by their art.  This is a great camp for you to develop your own personal style be seeing the styles of different artists.

 

3:00-6:00 pm  Painting is Fun!:  Focus on painting for the sheer fun of it.  You’ll enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and let the paint flow.  Try using bright colors and big shapes.  Create interesting compositions and patterns.  Use a variety of different brushes, styles and techniques.
