With five quarterbacks projected to be selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft, according to the latest USA TODAY Sports mock draft, history would suggest that not all five will turn out to be NFL stars.
Perhaps the more likely scenario is that one or two become long-term starters and two or three go on to be busts. The last draft to have five quarterbacks selected in the first round was 1999, when Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Daunte Culpepper and Cade McNown were all first-rounders.
Notables: EJ Manuel (Round 1, Bills), Geno Smith (Round 2, Jets), Mike Glennon (Round 3, Buccaneers), Matt Barkley (Round 4, Eagles), Ryan Nassib (Round 4, Giants), Landry Jones (Round 4, Steelers)
The 2013 draft class as a whole is unremarkable. Manuel was a surprise first-rounder; many expected Smith to be the first to be selected. Some even suggested that Nassib was the best quarterback in this class. Barkley was projected to be among the first players taken in a 2012 draft class that included Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III as the top two players selected. Instead, he returned for his senior season at USC, didn’t have as impressive a year as he did as a junior and suffered a shoulder injury.
Notables: Tony Banks (Round 2, Rams), Bobby Hoying (Round 3, Eagles), Jeff Lewis (Round 4, Broncos), Danny Kanell (Round 4, Giants), Damon Huard (undrafted, Bengals), Ray Lucas (undrafted, Patriots)
